Mark 10:35-45 (English Standard Version)

The Request of James and John

35(A) And James and John,(B) the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us(C) whatever we ask of you.” 36And he said to them, (D) “What do you want me to do for you?” 37And they said to him, “Grant us(E) to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left,(F) in your glory.” 38Jesus said to them, (G) “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able(H) to drink the cup that I drink, or(I) to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, (J) “The cup that I drink(K) you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized,(L) you will be baptized, 40but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant,(M) but it is for those for whom it has been(N) prepared.” 41And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42(O) And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles(P) lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43But(Q) it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,[a] 44and whoever would be first among you must be(R) slave[b] of all. 45For even the Son of Man came not to be served but(S) to serve, and(T) to give his life as a ransom for(U) many.”

Generosity is the Hallmark

2 Corinthians 9:6-15 (English Standard Version)

The Cheerful Giver

6The point is this:(A) whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully[a] will also reap bountifully. 7Each one must give as he has decided in his heart,(B) not reluctantly or under compulsion, for(C) God loves a cheerful giver. 8And(D) God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency[b] in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 9As it is written,

(E) “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever.”

10He who supplies(F) seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and(G) increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11(H) You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which(I) through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 12For the ministry of this service is not only supplying(J) the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. 13By their approval of this service,(K) they[c] will glorify God because of your submission flowing from your(L) confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, 14while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. 15(M) Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

Discipleship is the Path

Mark 8:34-35 (English Standard Version)

34And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him(A) deny himself and(B) take up his cross and follow me. 35For(C) whoever would save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake(D) and the gospel’s will save it.

The Impossible Happens

Luke 1:26-38 (English Standard Version)

Birth of Jesus Foretold

26In the sixth month the angel(A) Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named(B) Nazareth, 27(C) to a virgin betrothed[a] to a man whose name was Joseph,(D) of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28And he came to her and said, “Greetings,(E) O favored one,(F) the Lord is with you!”[b] 29But(G) she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for(H) you have found favor with God. 31And behold,(I) you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and(J) you shall call his name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of(K) the Most High. And the Lord God(L) will give to him the throne of(M) his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob(N) forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

34And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”[c]

35And the angel answered her,(O) “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of(P) the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born[d] will be called(Q) holy—(R) the Son of God. 36And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her(S) who was called barren. 37For(T) nothing will be impossible with God.” 38And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant[e] of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And(U) the angel departed from her.

Prepared: “The Coming Kingdom”

Mark 11:1-10 (English Standard Version)

Mark 11

The Triumphal Entry

1(A) Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to(B) Bethphage and Bethany, at(C) the Mount of Olives, Jesus[a] sent(D) two of his disciples 2and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied,(E) on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. 3If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.'” 4And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. 7And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. 8And many(F) spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. 9And those who went before and those who followed were shouting,(G) “Hosanna!(H) Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10Blessed is(I) the coming(J) kingdom of(K) our father(L) David!(M) Hosanna in the highest!”
